If you’ve been to many local comedy shows, chances are you’ve run into Rob Crean. When he’s not a tour guide for the Freedom Trail, Crean teaches stand-up comedy at ImprovBoston and is the brains behind Anderson Comedy and its live show, The Gas, every Friday at Great Scott.

How long have you been doing comedy?
I’ve been doing stand-up for about seven years, and before that I did sketch comedy since about 1996. I was in a group called Pure Beans in high school. Then in 1999 I started the Anderson Comedy Group with some friends. My first joke was an impression of the worst parrot. He’d just squawk, “Brap! Brap! Tomato!” Man, that parrot sucks!
What jokes are you best known for?
I’m best known for my impressions.
I only have three and two of them are of Abraham Lincoln, but either that or a joke that involves me mime jerking off two guys at the same time.

You also describe yourself as a Muppet in one of your bits. Why?
Looking in the mirror, mainly, but in particular, any video or photo of myself where the frame ends at my waist. When you can’t see my legs, I swear it’s easier to imagine a puppeteer down there than it is to imagine my actual legs.
You joke about relationships, but has dating been easier or more difficult being a comic?
Good question. Dating has gotten easier as I’ve gotten older, but I’m not sure if it’s related to being a comic. For some reason, even though I keep getting older and fatter and uglier, I keep getting more attractive.
You know how sometimes you see a really pretty girl with some guy who’s an ugly loser, and it makes you so mad? I’m that guy.
