What do you think you do for a genre or thought process with comedy?
It’s always a hard question. It’s a thing everyone always asks, but usually, my answer to it almost always is, “Oh, you should come and see me do a show and then figure it out.” ‘Cause basically there are two types of comedy that they have in their head: Hedberg one-liners and the Steven Wrights or Dane Cooks, and then there’s no other type of comedian.
I think the whole point of standup is to not base yourself on anyone else.
How do you find yourself developing [as a comedian]?
I started out really one-liner-y; I was basically all one-liners. I still like quick jokes here and there, but as I’ve gotten more time going on, things have gotten a lot longer. I’m not one of those comics who tell it like it is onstage, but I just try to bring people into my brain a little bit.
So when did the obsession with bears start?
I’ve always had an interest in animals, I just think they’re awesome. I wrote that one “So you think you’re a bear” joke a while ago, and then a second one, and if you have two bits about a thing everyone in standup goes, “You like that thing a whole lot, don’t you?”
Beyond that, everyone now sends me everything that happens about bears.
“Oh! Andrew likes bears, this has bears. Here you go.” So, that perpetuates its own problem because now, even if I’m not obsessed with them, I know everything about them because everyone sends me everything about them. Which really intensifies their perception that I know everything there is to know about bears. There’s that, and Air Bud is the other one.
